The Legend of the Mobile Goat

If you’ve lived in Mobile long enough, you’ve heard the whispers. If you’re a visitor, you might have noticed our community slogan—"Where Nature Speaks to You"—and wondered if our hills have ears.
The truth is much more interesting. It’s the story of a man, a potato patch, and a very specific, very vocal goat.
A Newfoundland "Tell-Tale Heart"
Think of the legend of the Mobile Goat as a Newfoundland version of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart. But instead of a heartbeat under the floorboards, the "haunting" happens in a garden patch behind a six-foot granite rock.
As the old local song goes, a man named Dillon was out in his field, working the land and—as was his reputation—letting fly a string of colorful Newfoundland curses. Suddenly, a voice from the shadows began to echo his every move, questioning him with chilling persistence:
"Are you diggin' 'em, Dillon? Are you diggin' 'em deep?"
Just like the narrator in Poe’s classic tale, Dillon was consumed by a mix of guilt and terror. Convinced that his "sinful" language had finally summoned the Devil himself in the form of a goat, Dillon dropped his shovel and fled. He didn't realize until much later that it was actually a passing priest playing a clever trick to put an end to his blasphemy!
Why It Matters Today
In an age of generic suburbs and quiet towns, Mobile stands apart because we have stories like this. A "talking goat" isn't just a quirky tale; it represents the wit, the mischief, and the slightly magical way we look at the world here on the Irish Loop.
When we say "Nature Speaks to You" in Mobile, we aren't just talking about the wind in the trees. We’re nodding to our ancestors who found humor in the unexpected and turned a local encounter into a legend that has lasted over a century.
Preserving the Voice of Mobile
As we modernize our community website and look toward the future, we think it’s important to keep one hoof in the past. Folklore like the Mobile Goat is what gives our community its "character." It reminds us to listen a little closer to the world around us—you never know who (or what) might have something to say.
Do you have a favorite version of the song? We want to hear from you! If you remember a specific verse your grandparents sang, or if you have an old recording of the ballad, share it with us in the comments or send us a message through our contact page. Let's keep the story of the Mobile Goat alive for the next generation.
